Uterine fibroids is common in women and of all ages, especially during childbirth and pregnancy. Uterine fibroids can be treated with follow-up, medical or surgical treatments. Choosing the intervention method depends on patient's condition, tumor size and location.

If the tumor is still small, not causing symptoms such as menorrhagia, hemorrhage, then patients should have periodical medical checkup or medical treatment by just taking medication. If the tumor is large with the above symptoms, patients should undergo surgery with preserved or removed uterus depending on their condition.

According to Pharmacist Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram who won the State Award in 2010 with her research on Crinum latifolium L., and owns the scientific subject of Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh) granted the plant variety protection by the Department of Crop Production, Trinh nu Crila plant is a valuable herb that has been used in remedies for uterine fibroids for years over in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, there are 7 types of Crinum latifolium L. plant, which have the same botanical appearance, but different effects. In which, Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh) has been chosen by Ministry of Health to be invested in research and development by the State serving community health and export.

Finished products from this plant are also exported to the US market, meeting the strict requirements of the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).

“Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh) contains bioactive substances (alkaloids) that can inhibit tumor cell growth, stimulate immunity, have hematopoiesis and anti-inflammatory effect without any influence on liver, kidney and health of the user. This result has also been recognized by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

For many patients with uterine fibroids, finished products from Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh) has been clinically tested at the Central Obstetrics Hospital, Traditional Medicine Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City, and Tu Du Hospital. The test results reach 79.5% of the people participating in the clinical trial”, said Dr. Tram.

It is known that in Vietnam, Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh) is propagated and cultivated in the GACP-WHO plantation in Long Thanh (Dong Nai province). This medicinal plant has been granted the plant variety protection. With standard farming conditions, Trinh nu Crila is planted and harvested ensuring high quality and amount of precious biological active ingredients.

Also according to Pharmacist Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, patients should not use herbal plants arbitrarily, because it can be harmful to their health. Now, there are many plants with similar morhological appearance to Trinh nu Crila plant (Crinum latifolium L. var. crilae Tram & Khanh), but these plants have not been researched to be used as raw materials for drug production.
