Successive general investigation of the effectiveness of medicinal materials mainly grown in Vietnam to maintain researching on valuable genetic resources as well as checking of plan for medicinal herb plantations in Vietnam to boost the development of domestic pharmaceutical industry.

Those are some solutions to promote the development of domestic pharmaceutical industry which were noted in the Conference “The development of medicinal herbs and national medicinal products” held by the Drug Administration - the Ministry of Health at Binh Duong on May 30 with the attendance of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.
According to the Ministry of Health, until now, Vietnam has discovered 3,948 species of plants and fungi possibly used as medicine. Some Vietnamese valuable medicinal sources have been recognized worldwide with great potential for development in the future such as anise, Crinum latifolium L., Cinnamomum, Cynara scolymus, Ngoc Linh ginseng, Artemisia annua and Artemisia luscious.
Total production of medicinal materials cultivated in Vietnam is around 3,000-5,000 tons/year. In which, the most significant ones are Artemisia annua (500 tons), Cinnamomum (300 tons), Desmodium styracifolium (nearly 300 tons)..., especially Crila capsule successfully extracted from Crinum latifolium L. for BPH treatment is included in the national product list.
Although there are sufficient conditions for cultivating many kinds of highly valuable medicinal materials, the development of medicinal material plantation has to cope with many difficulties due to ragged spontaneous production at small scale, lack of coordination and unstable medicinal material market.
At the conference, in order to overcome shortcomings in development of domestic pharmaceutical industry, many solutions and proposals about market management (inter-sectoral coordination in managing medicinal material import, managing quality of medicinal material import, constructing policy to support the development of medicinal material); solution about conservation and development of medicinal resources, science and technology, and training human resource and so on were mentioned by representatives of each unit.
Considering recommendations of delegates, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan assigned the Ministry of Health to continue the general investigation of the effectiveness of medicinal materials mainly grown in Vietnam; to maintain the research of valuable genetic resources to develop medicinal resources suitable for each region’s soil conditions, as well as to check the plan for plantation of Vietnamese precious medicinal materials such as anise, Cinnamomum, Cynara scolymus.
In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the support of the Government and the Ministry of Health through favorable mechanisms and policies to create the best conditions for “three units”: the entrepreneur –the scientist – the farmer to develop medicinal materials effectively and sustainably as well as their responsibilities for quality closed building medicinal product distribution chain, directly serving community health.
At the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and the government task force visited Thien Duoc Co., Ltd., a company specializing in manufacturing Crila capsule extracted from Crinum latifolium L.
