According to statistics, in Europe the rate of men at the age of 40 with BPH is 80.1%. In Vietnam up to 63.8% of men over 50 and 76.93% of men between 75 and 79 are with this disease. From Crinum latifolium L.
“Royal Vigin” (its scientific name is Crinum latifolium L.) is broadleaf Crinum genus, Amaryllidaceae family, and is called ‘Toi loi’ and “Thai leek”. Their large population is in India, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand and so on.
The Vietnamese have long been accustomed to using Crinum latifolium leaves to treat diseases that today we call breast tumors, ovarian cysts in women and BPH in men... Patients with stomach cancer who were undergone radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Oncology Hospital can be treated by combining with Crinum latifolium L. leaves. They can enhance body resistance. Crinum latifolium L. hot aqueous extract has capability of inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, stimulating T–lymphocyte’s development, and activities. This work was studied at the Bulgarian and Austrian Academy and has been published in the International Journal of Medicine. On that basis, since 1990, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram has learned from handed-down experiences of royal physicians to seek and collect Crinum latifolium L. seeds from imperial capital Hue, Da Nang, and Nha Trang, then take them to Ho Chi Minh city to domesticate, cultivate, and formulate in form of Crinum latifolium L. tea which was allowed for nationwide circulation by Vietnam's Administration for Food Safety and Hygiene Department - the Ministry of Health...As user’s feedback, the result is very positive such as fibroid reduction in size, even disappear as seeing by the ultrasound. However, to formulate more highly active medicines with good effect and reasonable price, it is necessary to rely on modern studies.

Due to recognizing very good efficacy of Crinum latifolium L. on treating tumors and BPH, the Ministry of Health motivated, encouraged and created favorable conditions for Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram to continue focusing deeply on studying and extracting bioactive Alkaloids which have the capacity of inhibiting the growth of tumor cells and then formulating capsule which is more convenient for patients.
After over 14 years of hard study, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram’s research work obtained very positive results. Along with Prof. Dr. Do Tat Loi, she completed the classification, identification, description, and differentiation Crinum latifolium L. from other Vietnamese Crinum plants. To have a firm scientific basis for a scientific research process, she has studied with some scientists of some research institutes and Academy of Science; for example, she has worked with Prof. Dr. Fuchs of the Institute for Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry about substances against cancer and AIDS, Prof. Acad. Simeon Popov, E. Zvetkova researching the extraction process and the determination of Alkaloid chemical composition and structure and the optimal Alkaloid extraction process which can inhibit the growth of tumor cells (Antitumor - Crinafolidine, Crinafoline). In 1996, she transferred the entire study to Vietnam and continued to be created all favorable conditions by Department of Science Management–the Ministry of Health throughout her research process. Her effort finally were paid off when her and her colleagues’ research works were recognized by the Ministry of Health and Crila capsule was licensed for circulation by the Ministry of Health. Thanks to this medicine, patients have been cured radically. Dr. Ho Xuan Son - Former Editor of New Hanoi Newspaper suffered from BPH with 36g tumor, difficult urination, and frequent urination at night (6-7 times). After using Crila capsule, his disease significantly eased up, turned back to normal urination. Another patient, Pharmacist Tran Ba Chau, Central Procuracy had prostatic gland enlarging 66.6% and weighing 39.8g with appointed surgery. However, after 20 days of treatment with Crila, his disease symptoms significantly eased up. After 3 months of taking Crila, he felt his health was back to normal. After stopping taking Crila for 7 months later, he was checked with the results showing that his prostate was completely normal with the weight of 25grams (within the normal range). In addition to the positive treatment effect, the price of Crila is low, only 50% of that of imported medicines with less side effects. Crila was highly evaluated and clinically tested in a number of large hospitals, such as National Hospital of Traditional Medicine, Ho Chi Minh Hospital of Traditional Medicine, Vietnam Institute of Gerontology. Results showed the improvement of urinary disorder levels of BPH patients with the declination from 93.3% to 33.3%, 90% of patients with the reduction of tumor volume, in which 33.3% have prostates back to normal size after 2 months of treatment, especially by herbal medicine formulated from pure herb with no toxicity.
With the desire to modernize traditional medicine industry, now Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram continues studying Crinum latifolium L. and many other medicinal plants to find out their uses, then formulating many Vietnamese-branded medicines that have good treatment effects for patients at home and abroad. Since July 2005, Crila capsule was allowed for nationwide circulation by Drug Administration – the Ministry of Health in treatment of BPH.
