Online exchanges with winners of Ho Chi Minh Award and State Award

“Ho Chi Minh Award, State Award for Science and Technology - Many achievements come to life” is the topic of online exchanges among readers of Science and Development Newspaper and authors of several noble award-winning works in the morning of October 27th. 

With the principle of only consideraing quality, but not completely limit quantity, and public voting, 16 chosen works by the State Council to award Ho Chi Minh Award and State Award - Stage 5 are evaluated as worthy as the national Science & Technology appearance in the recent period. Before being honored with these two great awards, the works have shown their vast practical significance and social effects.

Some of them include a research work group named “Research and application of modern techniques on ionizing radiation in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and some other diseases” chaired by Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Khoa - Director of Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital which has won the Ho Chi Minh Award. The results of this work group help to diagnose early, accurately, detect recurrence, metastasis, accurately assess disease stage and treatment effecacies for many types of cancer. Thanks to that, tens of thousands of cancer patients have had an appropriate, effective and safe treatment regimen, and have enjoyed modern diagnostic and treatment technology at reasonable costs right in Vietnam.

The work group named “Research and application of modern dialysis techniques in emergency resuscitation for serious patients and response to a number of dangerous diseases” by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Gia Binh, Head of Department of Active Rehabilitation, Bach Mai Hospital, has made a breakthrough in increasing the survival rates of critically ill patients, for example, reducing the mortality rate of patients with severe acute liver failure from 90% to 50%.
The work group named “Research and application of scientific and technological to ensure the safety of blood transfusion, serving emergency cases, treatment and blood reservation for security, national defense and disaster” by the scientists from Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has helped to save thousands of billion VND in treatment solving shortage of blood that used to be a problem of the medical profession, including in remote and island areas; reducing the risk of diseases transmitted by blood transfusion and so on.

And the work named “Synchronous construction of urban and rural technical infrastructure, protecting the environment, preventing natural disasters and responding to climate change” by Dr. Hoang Duc Thao - General Director of Busadco Company, is evaluate to change the traditional production method, thereby saving production costs, improving labor productivity, and being highly effective in the National target program on clean water and environmental sanitation in rural areas, Program on responding to climate change; National target program on building a new countryside, and so on.

It is easy to see that, with the above works, research achievements have really come to life and have a profound impact, creating a turning point in the development of the industry and the field it serves, or even change the lives of many people, and the above-mentioned works on medical - pharmaceutical and infrastructure construction are vivid examples. That is exactly what Vietnamese science is trying to achieve.

To honor scientists and have better understanding of value of the works winning the Ho Chi Minh Award and the State Award on science and technology for the realities of socio-economic life, Journal of Science and Development has held an online exchanges with award-winning authors, including Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Khoa, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Gia Binh, Dr. Hoang Duc Thao, Pharmacist Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram – the winner of 2010 State Award, chairman of the research work group on Vietnamese Crinum latifolium L. plant in supporting cancer treatment; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thi Mai An - co-author of the research work group named “Research and application of scientific and technological to ensure the safety of blood transfusion, serving emergency cases, and blood reservation for treatment” winning 2016 Ho Chi Minh Award. The exchange takes place from 9am to 11am on October 27th at the building of Science and Development Newspaper located at No. 70 Tran Hung Dao street, Hanoi.
