Female doctor put Crinum latifolium L. royal throne

08/26/2006

15 years of endurance "to eat and to sleep" with the plant holding such an exquisite name, she gave an inexpressible happiness to those who unfortunately suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia and uterine fibroids. This success was appraised highly by the Council of Science in Vietnam and regarded as one of the medical achievements of Viet Nam. On August 18, 2005, National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (Ministry of Science and Technology) announced a decision to grant the registration patent and utility solution for the work “medicine for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) formulated from Alkaloids  which are extracted from Crinum latifolium L. leaves and method of preparation” of  Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram. Arduous journey has reached to its destination, but as an indefatigable traveler, she has never had one single day to rest on her studies because she knew she was not alone.

Belief in herself
These days, she is shuttling constantly between Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. CRILA capsule is sold so quickly that there was not enough provision supply for market demand. Despite having the manufacturing formula and automatic operation chain, Dr. Tram is not at ease if the production process is operated without her presence. She keeps such a workaholic attitude of a scientist that she seems to be addicted and mesmerized when she finds another usage of her medicine. Because of her very passion for her work, she spent tens of thousands dollars of her prize money for her first scientific research in Bulgaria and the money selling her own land and buildings buying seedlings and taking plying tests on Crinum latifolium L. After 15 years of hard and silent study, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram succeeded in producing Crila capsule 100% extracted from Crinum latifolium L. leaves, which can treat BPH and uterine fibroids. Drug Administration in Vietnam officially approved Crila capsule for a nationwide circulation. In the day Crila came out, Dr. Tram devoted the most beautiful flowers that her friends and colleagues had given to her to congratulate on her success to her father - Nguyen Van Truong, Prof. Doctor in Science and labor hero. Her respectable father wished her to become a pharmacist when she was a little girl. He was always her driving force and belief for her bumpy but glorious path of scientific research. ‘Like father, like son’, the old saying has its true value with the family that has honored the traditional fondness of learning for many generations.
Looking back to the past, she insisted ‘I have never been tired and discouraged. My joy and my passion were so strong that I could overcome many challenges. The result must be right because I assure that I am and have been on the right way. Because of this belief, I am very determined. There is a will, there is a way.’

Crinum latifolium L. "blooms" to make the world a better place.
In the small house at the end of Tran Xuan Soan street, associated with the childhood of her four sisters, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram gave me – ‘an outsider’ –  who is in the dark about the knowledge and field she is studying an interesting conversation. The rare but yellow sunshine in the winter evening made the atmosphere in the small house more cozy and friendly. Pouring warm cup of tea kept in a warmed basket to invite guest, she smiled and said, ‘At this age, over 50, but each time coming back to the small house of my parents I feel as if I were living in the naive childhood years. All my four sisters who can have this day are all thanks to our parents. The first people I share my joys, successes in science with are my parents. Parents are always ready to listen, learn, and share with me. Especially my father - he was the one who set the direction and lay foundation for building her love and passion for science in her. ‘So what if you are unhappy or failed in your job, whom will you share with?’ Listening to my curious question, she said to me softly ‘I share with myself. At such times, I often conceal it, enduring solely because I do not want to worry my beloved ones. I encourage myself and find another way to solve such unsatisfactory work’.
On the day Crila was tested on animals and human outside the country, it showed a good test result; however, returning home Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tram had to face with obstacles that were the proposals for Crila to be experienced clinical trials on patients by reputed professors and doctors. Many people stated that there are no capsules from medicinal herbs that can cure tumors. An obstetrics professor said ‘If this drug can treat uterine fibroids, it will be magical drug.’ However, not being discouraged by that opinion, with the process which was proved with fundamental theories, scientific basis and clinical trials on 50 voluntary patients at some hospitals, Dr. Tram finally convinced scientists and doctors about the treatment effect of CRILA. Through modern methods of examination, ultrasound, and PSA test on patients having BPH and being on the risk of prostate cancer, she has the clearest and most persuasive evidence to prove her research work. A patient with a 63 mm tumor was assigned surgery. After treatment, the tumor size reduced to 25mm. Moreover, Crila also works well in improving patients’ urination at night, 8-10 times per night. After taking CRILA, it reduced to 2-3 times per night and patients do not have to urinate at night anymore. Besides, patients having uterine fibroids with 5 multiple uterine fibroids, taking the drug, they have only 1-2 fibroids or no fibroids anymore, ... Remembering these difficult days, Dr Tram shook her head and said ‘Though the drug was undergone a clinical trial overseas, in Vietnam I had to do all again. If scientists or doctors suspect any problems or ask any questions, I have to answer or prove them with all my effort. I spent 5 years on convincing scientists to agree CRILA test on patients at hospitals. ‘So where is the incentive to help you overcome these challenges?’ I asked. Without hesitation, she smiled gently and answered my question ‘The joy of patients. I know I'm on the right path and the well-progressing results of patients during treatment with CRILA make me determined firmly. There was a patient in the Mekong Delta with uterine fibroids who was married but childless. Her husband's family definitely wanted the couple to separate. Now, everything is OK and she has given birth to a boy.  While she was calling to say thank you to me, she sobbed and said ‘I don’t have a chance to visit you in person yet, but I and my baby are forever grateful to you.’
From a desire as a trustee of her father for a capsule from valuable medicinal herbs of Vietnam, the eldest daughter of the former Editor of Encyclopedia, the Director of Institute of Ecology did not let him down. Crila is categorized in drug stock as a drug that can treat tumors, medical oncology, and BPH from herbal sources. The person who puts up Crinum latifolium L. to throne is a Vietnamese female scientist. Even though she is at the age of 56, still in her heart a passion for studying a drug from domestic medicinal herbs is burning. The ultimate desire of this loving woman is researching more to make Crila a drug treating cancer. Furthermore, by coordinating Crinum latifolium L. with other plants in Vietnam, the drug can stimulate the patient's immune system to support AIDS patients.
Very sincerely, she said ‘I have great passion but I am afraid that time, age and health do not allow me to go to the end of the way. I will try to go through early hardships and then hand over to young scientists to take my behalf. The happiest thing is that the results of my work can bring joy and new life to many patients.’ Looking at her face filled up with happiness, I can see an immense love for life, and human in her joyful eyes and gentle smile her passion for science that comes from nature spiritual source will last forever, and light the flame of her heart for patients.
